National Report: California Ranks First in Protecting Kids from Tobacco, But Tobacco Industry Still Spending Big and Addicting Children

WASHINGTON, Dec. 13, 2017 -- California ranks first nationwide in funding programs that prevent kids from smoking and help smokers quit, according to a report released today by leading public health organizations. Despite the good news, there's more work to do to protect kids from deadly tobacco addiction. That's because the tobacco industry outspends tobacco prevention efforts in California by over $250 million, and nearly 11,000 California children will become daily smokers this year.
California is spending $327.8 million this year on tobacco prevention and cessation programs, which is 94.2 percent of the $347.9 million recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Meanwhile, tobacco companies spend $581.1 million every year to market their deadly and addictive products in California.

Teamsters Proud To Partner With Robotics Innovators In San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 13, 2017 -- California Teamsters are applauding the passage of legislation by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors this week that will create a permitting process for delivery robots.
The legislation will allow for companies that are based in San Francisco and have a labor peace agreement to conduct research and development and deploy human-operated robots that will deliver essentials, including groceries and meals. A limited number of the robots will be allowed to operate on the city's sidewalks.
"We are excited to partner with companies and work with government to pass innovative policy that promotes good union jobs. This is innovation that helps workers, instead of displacing them," said Rome Aloise, President of Teamsters Joint Council 7.

SAN NICOLAS, Aruba, Dec. 13, 2017 -- This past November, TeamCITGO Aruba participated in the annual Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association (AHTA) Beach Cleanup from Baby Beach to the dog cemetery in San Nicolas. The event was the first volunteer outreach for the new volunteer organization and 95 TeamCITGO volunteers filled approximately 175 trash bags with trash from the beach area. Trash was then transported to the event's central drop off point at Seroe Colorado to be properly disposed of.
